About the Society of Pilar

The Society of Pilar is a missionary society founded on 26 September 1887 in Goa, India. Officially known as the Society of the Missionaries of St. Francis Xavier, it was established with the vision of spreading the Gospel and serving humanity through faith, education and social outreach.

The Society derives its popular name from Pilar, Goa, where its headquarters were established. Since then, its members have come to be affectionately known as the Pilar Fathers. Guided by the missionary spirit of service, the Society has expanded its work across India and several countries around the world.

The Society of Pilar believes in the holistic development of every individual. Through educational institutions, social service centres, healthcare initiatives and pastoral ministries, it strives to build communities rooted in faith, compassion, justice and human dignity.

Today, the Society continues to inspire thousands of students, educators and community leaders through its commitment to excellence, integrity and service.

Historical Journey

1887

Foundation of the Society of Pilar in Goa by Rev. Fr. Bento Martins.

1891

Establishment of the headquarters at Pilar, Goa, from which the Society derives its name.

1939

Reorganization and renewal of the Society, strengthening its missionary vision.

1950 – Present

Expansion into education, healthcare, social service and missionary work across India and abroad.

Today

Continuing to serve through schools, colleges, parishes, hostels, social development projects and pastoral ministries.

Education & Social Impact

Education has always been one of the major ministries of the Society of Pilar. Through schools and educational institutions, the Society seeks to form individuals who are academically competent, morally upright and socially responsible.
